Vyšší Brod

Town in the valley of the river Vltava near the Austrian border, lying along an ancient trade route from Bohemia to Upper Austria. A Cistercian monastery was established by the guard settlement in 1259, and building continued throughout the 14th centruy. The monastery became an important economic and cultural centre. The core of the bbuildings with the church of the Assumption, the Chapter House and cloisters survive from the Gothic period. In the 17th and 18th century baroque buildings were added, in the first place, the New Convent and the Abbey. The paintings by the Master of the Vyšší brod Altarpiece come from this monastery. The library contains valuable manuscripts. The town has several late Gothic houses, a Renaissance town hall and a parish church founded 1260.
